Corpse Flower Ready to Bloom at OCC

An odorous, tropical flower is expected to bloom on a Southern California college campus on Wednesday, June 28. Orange Coast College’s horticulture program hosts the corpse flower, amorphophallus titanum, which is affectionately known at the school as ‘Little Dougie.’

 

The corpse flower will be on display at the the school administration building from 10am to 6pm. Once it flowers, visitors will be allowed to stay until 10pm.

 

The last time the flower bloomed was in 2014. Hoards of people came to see and smell it then and are expected to do so again.

 

Little Dougie is nearly five feet tall and weighs over 30 pounds. That is small compared to other corpse flowers, which can weight up to 200 pounds.

 

Originally from Sumatra, Indonesia, the corpse flower is an endangered plant. It takes about ten years to make its first bloom, and thereafter blooms every three to five years. The strong odor it gives off is related to how it pollinates.

 

The horticulture program will ask visitors to donate $3. Funds will go to support the program’s scholarship.

 

Orange Coast College is located in the coastal town of Costa Mesa. It is the largest community college in Orange County, with more than 25,000 students attending each semester. In operation since 1948, it is also the top ranked college in the OC, sending the most transfer students to the University of California and California State University as well as private colleges.

 

As a commuter campus, the school has made efforts to improve student life on campus by investing in its student resource center, Watson Hall.
